As much as I love Summer, Fall is that special time where temps start to cool off and the “most wonderful time of the year” is just around the corner! 😉 However, in the South, the summer heat can easily last through September (and even into October!). Therefore, the Fall 2021 trends that I tend to gravitate towards are the ones that work well in cool mornings and hot afternoons.
Overall, I prefer classics to trends, but if you pick the trend correctly, it can do wonders for your wardrobe! When selecting the right trend, it has the potential to revamp and create longevity for your wardrobe. For 2021, I am focusing on 10 trends that can last from year to year while still providing closet refresh.
10 Best Fall 2021 Trends
1. Cut-Outs
Cut-outs started earlier this year, but it’s still going strong through the Fall/Winter season. This may seem daunting, but there are plenty of sophisticated and elevated ways to wear cut-outs. If you live in a warm climate, cut-outs can provide the perfect cooling relief for a cozy look. A cut-out element on a chunky sweater, or an elegant cut-out on a dress, is a great way to add breathability without those heavy layers.Â
2. Feminine Ruffles
I am very happy to see that ruffles continue to live through as one of the hottest Fall 2021 trends! In my mind, a ruffle detail should be considered a classic at this point. Nonetheless, a well-placed ruffle is a sophisticated way to refresh your basics (i.e button-up, blouses, shorts, etc.) Ruffles are a great trend to invest in because I don’t see them going away anytime soon!Â
3. Patchwork
When you hear patchwork, you might reminsice of the vintage Ralph Lauren days. Oh you know… the Ralph Lauren patchwork plaid that seemed to be on everythinggg?! Well, don’t worry, the Fall 2021 patchwork has gotten a facelift, and it’s beautiful! This patchwork motif works well with grandmillennial style, and of course when implemented correctly can continue to be a staple in your wardrobe! Â
4. Metallic/Shine
Shine for the holidays? Groundbreaking.
As with ruffles, metallic/shine pops up every fall season, so it should be considered a staple element. There is just something so refined and beautiful when you add some sparkle to your winter wardrobe. In order to not overdo it, I pick one shine piece and have that be the main focus. This will keep you from looking like a disco ball while giving you options to wear for date night (regardless of holidays).Â
5. Unique Knitwear
Stick with me, we are half way there! Clocking in at #5, we have unique knitwear. Not going to lie, I get overly excited when I can add some unique knitwear pieces to my wardrobe. Whether it is embroidery, matching sets, or chunky texture, they make for fun outfits (and conversation starters!) Some of the knitwear focuses this year are “aspen-inspired”, sensual necklines, and elevated everyday knits.
6. The Preppy Gal
Speaking as a biased 90’s baby, I am happy to see the preppy vibes making a strong comeback. Collegiate inspired pieces like sweater vests and turtlenecks are an easily wearable trend this Fall! I fully intend to channel my inner Princess Diana, and sport some of these preppy looks this season. And this might go without saying, but these preppy items are definitely worth the invest as they will last season after season.
7. Puff, Puff, and More Puffs
I was thinking of breaking this trend up into other sections, but it deserved its own spotlight! Not only are puff sleeves still popular, but big and cozy puffer jackets are picking up speed. Thankfully, you don’t have to go full Michelin man to take part in this trend. There are many options where you can find a sleek puffer coat that adds some elegance while still staying warm.Â
8. Tailored Made
I know, I know, tailoring isn’t a “trend”, but alas here we are. This section goes hand in had with the preppy vibes as double breasted blazers, sleek wool coats, and wide trousers are a Fall 2021 must-have. Pair it with the unique knits or a smart button-up to complete this season-less look. Furthermore, keep in mind that the focus is on the tailoring, so the fit should be perfect!Â
9. Daring Patterns
Who says your winter clothes have to be boring? Add some spice to your outfits with some cute pattern play. This can be anything from preppy gingham to fun florals. However, I would not recommend wearing prints on areas you want to disguise. Prints are a great way to attract attention, but have that attention focus on areas you want to elevate to give you that boost of confidence!
10. Roaring 20’s
Fall 2021 Trend Finds
And of course, I wouldn’t leave you hanging without suggesting some of these Fall 2021 trend finds! These are pieces that are everyday wearable, so you can see how to easily incorporate these trends. Furthermore, for all my expecting mamas, I have put an (*) on finds that are maternity friendly!
Luckily, pastel colors are popular this Fall like powder blues and blush pink! But if you want to make them feel a little more “Fall” try a slightly darker rose or a teal. I will also be mixing in some greens (olive, sage, etc.) to help give it a seasonal balance.Â
Conclusion
Hope this Fall 2021 trends list gives you that jumpstart for your shopping! Since there hasn’t been big Fall drops at the store yet, this is just a handful of the amazing pieces this season. I will definitely put together more blog posts as more Fall pieces head to stores. If you are looking for more reads on how to turn trends into seasonless items: click here.
